I hate how this is used as an excuse for murder. I think anyone who can kill is fucked up in the head, war is no exception - I am almost ashamed to think that some of my ancestors killed in the war and used this as an excuse.

"Fighting for your country" seems like it's glamorizing murder, making it acceptable.

It is almost as bad as terrorists who use their religion as their reason for murder and destruction.

You'll probably all disagree, but wanted to hear other opinions.

On this I'd like to present a scenario for you:
You're family is being held hostage by a gunman and you can either let your family die and allow the gunman to live, or kill the gunman and allow your family to live.

Which would you choose?

Killing is completely justifiable sometimes, it's just a fact of life, we're animals fighting against instinct if we choose not to kill. The act of self preservation is essential to our survival.

I agree 100%.

How can you kill a man for committing murder?

I respectfully disagree, you have good points, but life is full of war, what would happen if people did not fight for our country? We would all be under tyranny and unjust, corrupt ruling.

Fighting for your country is one thing; trampling a sovereign nation is another.

I disagree, greatescape. There are more important things than life. Higher values, better causes, bigger loyalties.

I agree here. To be loyal to the world, and to be a loyal soldier, not corrupt on a kill-joy, is acceptable. If you must kill, to create peace, or to save the lives of many innocents, so be it. However, the killing of un-armed people is wrong, the killing of defenceless innocent civilians is wrong, and killing over peti-differences is wrong.
If people must be killed, to make the world a better place, it must happen

Well Im in the army, and I never thought I'd ever be able to kill anyone.

But once youre in uniform, youve got your buddies around you, and youre trained, I can assure you that anyone would be able to. Thats been shown in the 2 world wars, where civilians have been put in uniform and given a gun.

Once youre trained and have spent time in the military, you suddenly get this fear of not wanting to fail, not wanting to let your team down. And Im sure that when you point that gun at someone youre not going to want to pull that trigger, but you feel your corporal is telling you to and you do. Its like when he tells you to run to that fency 300m away, you dont want to, but you do it becuase he told you to.
